    Market Overview

The Vietnamese retail sector is projected to register strong double-digit growth during the forecast period, 2019 to 2024. The market is segmented by product category, distribution channel, and market dynamics.

  • Modern retail outlets also offer private brands/products that can be exclusively purchased in their stores. In this way, they can assure every consumer that the products they sell are specially made to fit the demands and needs of their shoppers.
  • One key factor involved in Vietnamese consumers choosing to shop in traditional markets is that they can buy ingredients in smaller portions. In response to this, supermarkets are offering RTCs or ready-to-cook packages that are better suited for the daily needs of an average consumer.
  • Food products, non-food products, and home appliances are also offered in supermarkets, which makes shopping easier, as they offer everything needed for the customer under one roof.
  • To further improve the shopping experience, some stores have in-house bakeries and cafés where consumers can hang out and enjoy with family or friends.
  • The local population’s inclination to make their purchases in the traditional outlets are hinged owing to factors, such as high availability of these outlets everywhere in the country posing convenience and ease of access for consumers, comparatively lower prices of goods and products (which consumers can still bargain), fresh produce supply source that is better at wet markets, and traditional retailers offering flexible package sizes for day-to-day consumption.

    Growth of Convenience Stores Market

    • In 2018, nearly 74.7% of the total market share went to retailing of products bought for use. Other sectors took up a share of the retail market, including accommodation, catering, and travel services.
    • The growth of modern trade (fast-moving consumer goods) has been greater than traditional retail, owing to broad factors, such as the growing economy, increasing urbanization, a younger population, and rising incomes.
    • Nearly 40% of the population of Vietnam is under 25 years of age, and their average income per capita has been growing at a rate of around 30% every couple of years.
    • This age bracket of consumers shows increasing confidence in spending patterns. In 2017, over 63% of Vietnam chose to use spare cash for savings, which was down from 76% in 2016. More consumers are spending on clothing, consumer electronics, vacations, and urban out-of-home entertainment.
    • The growing middle and affluent classes and the younger population value convenience and comfort. There is growth in the convenience store market, due to the expansion of companies, such as Circle K, which is expanding across Hanoi, and already has a strong foothold in Ho Chi Minh City.
    • The increasing presence of local players, such as Vinmart+, which has nearly 900 stores all over the country, and the recently introduced Bach Hoa Xanh by Mobile World, which plans to have about 1000 stores in Ho Chi Minh city, are helping expand the retail market of Vietnam.

Food Retail Industry is Dominated by Traditional Retailers

    • Revenue in the food and beverage sector is expected to grow annually by 3.0% (2019-2024).
    • The food retail industry in Vietnam is dominated by traditional retailers. As of 2018, the traditional retailers accounted for 94% of the retail grocery sales, and the remaining 6% sales contributed to modern retail sales.
    • According to industry experts, modern retail sales are expected to reach 18% of the total food retail sales by 2024.
    • The highly-dominated food landscape of the country, with wet markets and small businesses, is witnessing tremendous growth in the concept of the modern retail trade, with a growing number of convenience stores, hypermarkets, and supermarkets.
    • Traditional retailers, with lower rental and operational costs, have flexibility with packaging sizes and competitive prices. These traditional stores are ideal for purchasing small quantities at higher frequencies, so that fresh produce can be obtained.
    • With more than half of the young population, the consumption of food and beverages in the country is witnessing huge growth. Also, as of 2016, the annual growth of the country’s population was 1.1%, which indicated an increase in customers, as food is an essential item.
    • According to GSO, the sales of food and foodstuffs increased by 11.1%, in 2017.

Vietnam Feed Concentrate Market

The Vietnam feed concentrate market was valued at USD 2.07 billion in 2017, and is expected to register a CAGR of 4.97%, during the forecast period.

                                                 industry-reports/vietnam-feed-concentrate-market

The consumption of feed in the country has grown simultaneously with the expansion of the livestock sector, and about 20 billion metric ton of animal feed is consumed every year. Of the total feed consumed, 13.3 billion metric ton is industrial feed and 6.3 billion metric ton is self-made feed.

Demand-supply Gap in Protein Sources for Animal Feed Restraining the Vietnam Feed Concentrate Market

Amino acid, a form of protein, is an important component added to feed concentrates for feeding the final product to animals. Presently, Vietnam imports a large amount of input materials, like protein for feed processing. In future, the demand for animal feed and feedstuff is likely to continually increase, due to the growth of livestock production, particularly by large-scale commercial farms.  At present, Vietnam produces protein supplements in the range of 0.5 million metric ton to 1 million metric ton.

The deficit in the protein demand for feed in the year 2018, is 15 million metric ton and is estimated to increase to 16.9 million metric ton, by 2020. Hence, the domestic demand for protein in the manufacturing of feed concentrates is expected to increase the import of amino acids in the country, which, in turn, is expected to increase the price of feed concentrates in the country.

Energy Feed Accounts for the Largest Segment in Vietnam Feed Concentrate Market

The segment was estimated at USD 1.21 billion in 2017. Medium- to large-scale farmers usually use industrial feed to raise livestock (pigs, cows, and poultry), in order to ensure the quality of meat, milk, and egg as well as to reduce the risk of diseases. Small scale farmers use industrial feed in critical phases of livestock development (piglets, breeding pigs, etc.), but in other phases, they often use ingredients like rice bran of cassava to produce self-made feed, in order to save costs.

Oil cake from large-scale oil mills is often used as an ingredient in compound animal feeds. Some seeds, such as castor beans and yield oil cakes are not suitable for direct incorporation into animal feed, as they contain toxic substances.

Major Players: EuromiX, Cargill Inc., Nutreco, Mixscience, and Dachan Food, among others.

Vietnam Wind Energy Market

The market which is estimated to be USD XX billion in 2016, is expected to grow to USD XX billion by 2021, at a CAGR of XX percent.

Escalating demand for renewable energy, favourable government policies and decreasing cost of equipment has helped the rise of wind energy market size and is driving the wind power equipment market. The growing power demand and the cost of wind energy, especially from onshore wind farms is reducing due to the increase in the installations across the globe. This has made wind power an attractive option for governments wanting to cut down emissions.

The major restraining factor for the wind energy is the availability of fossil fuels. The investment required is high and the power generation is comparatively low compared to the conventional sources. Also, the intermittent nature of wind power makes it unreliable. However, wind power technology is fast progressing, and thus becoming cheaper and the developments for various wind systems like power storage technologies are increasing, which helps in the growth of the wind power market.

Vietnam has been the major cashew producer in the Asia-Pacific since 1990. Cashew is mainly grown as a cash crop in the country. The Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS) is responsible for the growth and development of the cashew industry in the country.

The cashew crop is grown in 300,000 ha in Vietnam, with an average productivity of 1,000 kg/ha. The major cashew nut producing areas in Vietnam are Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Long An, Kien Giang, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Lam Dong, Binh Thuan and Dong Nai. Binh Phuoc accounts for half of the cashew production in the country. The country has also evolved as the second largest cashew processor in the region as well as globally, with an annual capacity of 1.2 million metric tons.

Due to an ongoing supply crunch caused by the lower production in Vietnam and Western African markets, the global cashew prices are expected to continue to escalate in the near future. Shippers of RCN have negotiated new prices with sellers in Vietnam. Vietnam is currently focusing on increasing its productivity from 1,700 kg to 2,000 kg per ha, as disposed land for cashew production is limited in the country.
