Market Overview
Vietnam is naturally endowed with advantageous characteristics of land, climate, and water resources. The largest diversity of water sources and deltas in Vietnam create the affluence and typicality for Vietnamese agricultural products. The fruits and vegetable market is valued at USD 4.9 billion in 2016 and is expected to register a CAGR of 3.7%.
Some of the major fruits and vegetables produced are bananas, watermelons, cabbage, onions, and cauliflowers among others. Bananas and watermelons together make up around 35% of the gross fruits and production in Vietnam, while cabbages, onions, and cauliflowers are all contributed about 90% of the vegetables. Moreover, to meet the export and consumer demand for fruits and vegetables, the government is planning to invest more in the agricultural sector.
Increasing Export Demand
Vietnam is one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables, owing to its favorable climatic conditions and diverse water resources. In recent years Vietnam has exported its fruits and vegetables to high-standard economies such as China, the US, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia. Vietnam has exported around USD 543 million of fruits and vegetables accounting for an increase of about 26% from 2016 to 2016. Recent efforts in the technological application in harvesting and preservation, seed selection, and quality control are allowing the Vietnamese fruits and vegetable market to penetrate into the advanced markets. The country is expected to upsurge its export demand by promoting its negotiations in exporting apples and mangoes to US, red dragon fruit to Japan, apple, and lychee to South Korea. Recognizing its high potential market for fruits and vegetables, the country has to address some new alarming challenges like high-quality standards and technological advancements, in order to sustain its position in the international market.
Limited Access to Technology
Most of the production of fruits and vegetables in Vietnam focus on conventionally obsolete methods. The main reason for this includes the experiences gained by the individuals are soon be passed down to next generations over thousands of years, thereby restricting the access to technology. The other cause includes most of the cultivable land in Vietnam belongs to small holdings, which thus creating obstacles in operating monotonous and sizeable machines. Unfortunately due to lack of knowledge producers are overusing chemicals, which in turn is affecting the overall yield and quality of the crops. So in order to reduce the adverse impacts, ubiquitous agricultural practices are usually being followed by the Vietnamese farmers, which in turn is limiting the quality standards of Vietnam in terms of international trade. According to our analysis the other factors like high transportation costs, irradiation treatment for fruits and high preservation costs are also likely to impact the market for fruits and vegetable market in Vietnam, thereby affecting the competitiveness of the Vietnamese products in the International trade market.
Bananas Dominate the Fruits Segment
Bananas have been dominating the Vietnam market with a huge production accounting to 1.94 million metric tons in 2016, which is around 22% of the overall fruit production in Vietnam. Bananas are considered to be one of the largest grown fruits in Vietnam accounting for 19% of the fruit cultivable area. Banana was never considered to be the key fruit tree and Vietnam had never formulated any fruit development plans on banana, but observing its global trend, Vietnamese government is planning to produce more varieties of bananas with mere focus on production chain including harvesting, cleaning, labeling and packing, so as to maintain its competency in the international market.
Key Developments in Vietnam Fruits and Vegetables Market
July 2018 – Wholesale markets of fruits and vegetables are observing a serious threat due to improper disposal of agro-waste, because of which markets are spending about USD 7000 every month on collecting such huge waste.

Market Overview
The Vietnamese biopesticides market was valued at USD 26.45 million in the year 2018 and is expected to register a CAGR of 16.43%, during the forecast period (2019-2024). In 2018, bio-insecticides was the largest product segment of the market studied and accounted for a share of around 91.2% of the market. In Vietnam, R&D activities mainly focus on breeding new crop varieties and developing appropriate production technologies for such crops based on the IPM. However, not much has been done to promote organic agriculture, which would be needed if the biopesticides market needs to grow rapidly.
Scope of the Report
According to the US EPA, biopesticides include naturally occurring substances (biochemical pesticides), microorganisms (microbial pesticides), and pesticidal substances produced by plants (plant-incorporated protectants). The Vietnamese biopesticides market study covers all three types of above mentioned commercial microbial, biochemical pesticides, and plant-incorporated protectant products.
Key Market Trends
Increase in Arable Land
In Vietnam, an increase of 0.2 million hectares of arable land per year was recorded by World-Bank and hence, the use of pesticides and fertilizers are growing in the country. The Vietnamese government has adopted land policies to bring a shift from the collectivized state-controlled agricultural production system to one based on individual farm households in the market place. The total area of agricultural land has increased by 3.2 million hectares and the increase is largely forest land (2.9 million hectares), while the land for long-day crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and some varieties of wheat has increased by 0.27 million hectares.
Bio-insecticides to Dominate the Biopesticides Market by Type
Bio-insecticides is the largest and the fastest growing segment of the biopesticides industry, and rice utilizes most of the bioinsecticides. The segment accounts for 91.2% of the biopesticides market share and the market is expected to reach USD 60.61 million by 2024. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the past had called for a ban on certain insecticides in rice production as part of its new Action Plan to reduce planthopper damage to the rice crop in Asia, including Viet Nam. All of this has led to a shift toward increased use of bioinsecticides. Development of resistance to chemical insecticides and concerns over the deleterious effects of chemicals on environmental and human safety have provided a strong impetus for the development of microbial control agents in the integrated pest management in Vietnam.
Competitive Landscape
The Vietnamese biopesticides market is highly fragmented and has the presence of several local and international players. There are over 50 biopesticide firms in Vietnam, most of them are distributors (as opposed to manufacturers) competing in the approximately USD 1 billion crop protection market. The top six firms, however, account for more than 20% of bio-pesticide revenue in Vietnam. More than 50% of the market share is attributed to local companies having a wide distribution network in Vietnam. Vinachem occupies the largest market share in the bio-pesticide segment in Vietnam, owing to its strong R&D, wider product portfolio, and strong foothold in the local market of Vietnam.

Market Overview
The cut flower exports from Vietnam are projected to register a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period, increasing from USD 44,392 thousand in 2017 to an expected USD 69,373 thousand by 2023. The Vietnamese market for floriculture is gaining pace and the production of flowers is increasing rapidly. Besides, experts in the agricultural industry proclaim that Vietnam has a lot of potential in becoming a leading exporter of floriculture products.
Flowers are cultivated in Ngocha, Quang an, Nhat tan, Tay tuu, and Vinch tuy village of Hanoi; also, at Dang hai commune, An hai suburb in Haiphong, Go vap, and Hoc mon districts in Ho Chi Minh City; Districts 11 and 12 in Dalat. These areas cover 70-80% of total land area under flowers. Flower production gives high economic return, which is 10-20 times more in comparison to rice. Hence, farmers in these areas have better living standards than others.
The Fastest Market Growing Flower in Cut Flowers – Chrysanthemum
The export of chrysanthemums by Vietnam to the rest of the world is projected to witness a CAGR of 11.7% during the forecast period, with the value USD 26,082.40 thousand in 2017. The chrysanthemums of Vietnam are the largest category of cut-flowers exported to other countries, and with the sector taking shape, the share of chrysanthemums is likely to improve, during the forecast period. Moreover, this flower is expected to register the second highest CAGR during the forecast period, among all the cut flowers. The popular varieties/species of chrysanthemums include – Chrysanthemum morifolium, C. indicum, C. leacanthemum, Taiwan yellow, Japan yellow, Xuxi chrysanthemum, etc.
Favorable Agro-climatic Conditions for Rose, Chrysanthemum, and Other Ornamental Plants
Vietnam has two different climatic regions, namely the subtropical region in the north and the tropical region in the south. Moreover, there are regions with particular temperate climate. Lam Dong province is considered the ‘golden land’ for developing tropical and temperate flowers in the country, due to its ideal conditions, such suitable day and night temperatures, and enough flat land for large-scale production. Vietnam accounts for a number of river deltas with fertile alluvial soil, which is suitable for large-scale production of cut flowers. Owing to varied climatic conditions, tropical, subtropical, and temperate flowers can be grown throughout the year, in the country
High Cost of Adoption of Modern Technology
Commercial cut flower cultivation requires specialized nurseries armed with superior planting material, glass house cultivation, and proper irrigation facility. Glass houses with proper irrigation facility also need a high upfront and operating expenses. In order to utilize a greenhouse to the best of its ability, it’s necessary to invest in a kit, or in supplies that will have a good lifespan and proper characteristics for the cut flower to grow. Specialized nurseries with effective in vitro production technology require a huge investment, which is difficult for farmers to procure.
Key Developments of Vietnam Floriculture Market
Jan 2016, According to ITC, Vietnam is trying to expand the export of Da Lat flowers from the current 10% output to 30% by 2020.
Mar 2018, The Vietnam Floriculture industry provides many opportunities for growers and suppliers as the government of Vietnam has provided the package of USD 4.40 billion for developing hi-tech agriculture.

Market Overview
Owing to the benefits of bio-based products and the growing demand for organic crops in Vietnam, the biofertilizer market in the country is projected to register a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period. By the type of microorganism, the Azolla segment was, by far, the largest segment occupying a market share of 25% in 2016.
The rising claim for more environment-friendly and healthy agriculture is a strong incentive to find alternative strategies to replace the use of synthetic fertilizers. Higher return from the cultivation of organically-produced crops, adoption of new and advanced farming technologies, and increased regulations on chemical residue limits are the likely factors augmenting the market growth. Biofertilizers have been shown to be extremely effective on crops that are key to agriculture in Vietnam, such as cassava, rice, corn, sugarcane, black pepper, tree nuts, and coffee.
Adoption of New Farming Practices
System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a package of good agricultural practices for hand-planted rice, which increases yields, while using less seeds, water, and fertilizers. According to the Plant Protection Department, farmers who use SRI significantly reduce the use of chemicals, thus growing healthier food, improving soil quality, and protecting farm biodiversity. By 2015, there were 35 provinces in Vietnam applying SRI. This application mainly strives to reduce the usage of synthetic fertilizers by 30% by 2020, and to increase the usage of organic fertilizers. Another project was implemented from 2008 to 2014, the Vietnam Agriculture Competitiveness Project (ACP) which promoted modern farming technologies to improve productivity and protect the environment. More than 93,400 farmers were trained on sustainable farming techniques and new technologies. By 2020, the Vietnamese government aims to increase the area of implementation of such aforementioned projects and other projects, like SRI, to at least 50% of the agricultural cultivation.
Soaring Demand for Synthetic Fertilizers
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the import of plant-protection chemicals in Vietnam has drastically increased. The traceability of food provenance and production methods are poorly regulated and enforced in Vietnam, where food quality still receives less attention, as compared to quantity. This can be primarily attributed to the oversupply of chemical fertilizers in the country, because of which, the farmers use fertilizers in much higher quantities than required. According to the Argus World NPK Outlook to 2031, Vietnam’s large-scale demand for NPK is consistently around 4mn t/yr. In 2014, Vietnam imported USD 1,240,810 thousand fertilizers but the figure soared to USD 1,439,172 thousand in 2015.
Key Developments in the Market
April 2017 – Bioway Hitech Fertilizer Joint Stock Company officially signed the exclusive right to receive Bioway AT-12H fermentation technology from the company named Bioway Organic USA.

Agricultural Machinery Market
The factors that are driving this market are population growth, urbanization and higher productivity demand with the shrinking agricultural land throughout the globe, which have led to the growth in demand for agricultural machinery. Technological advancement for developing more efficient products, while keeping in mind the country-specific requirements, will provide opportunities for future growth of the sector.
Macro-Economic factors have a huge influence on Agricultural Machinery Market
The key factors influencing the sale of agricultural equipment are the level of net farm income and, to a lesser extent, interest rates, and general economic conditions, availability of financing and related subsidy programs, farmland prices, and farm debt levels. Net farm income is primarily impacted by the volume of acreage planted, commodity and livestock prices, stock levels, the impacts of ethanol demand, farm operating expenses (which includes fertilizer and fuel costs), crop yields, fluctuations in currency exchange rates, tax incentives, and government subsidies. Farmers tend to postpone the purchase of equipment when the farm economy is declining and increase their purchases when economic conditions improve.
The quality, availability, and cost of used equipment for sale also affect the level of new equipment sales. Weather condition is a major determinant of crop yields, and therefore affects equipment-buying decisions. In addition, geographical variations in weather from season to season may also affect sales volumes differently in different markets. Government policies may influence the market for agricultural equipment by monitoring the levels of acreage planted, with direct subsidies affecting particular commodity prices, or with other payments delivered directly to farmers.
Global organization initiatives, such as those of the World Trade Organization, can also affect the market with demands for differences in governmental policies and practices regarding agricultural tariffs, subsidies, and acceptance of genetically modified organisms, such as feed, seed, and animals.
The increase in crop production for biofuels has also altered the crop pattern and crops cultivated. The most significant change in the US crop production was the replacement of cotton and soybeans with corn. As a result, agricultural producers are faced with new challenges for managing crop residues and have adapted by changing the type of equipment used. Although the demand for new agricultural equipment dependent on macro-economic situation. The aftersales market is historically less volatile than the new equipment market and, therefore, helps limit the impact of declines in new equipment sales on the operating results of full-line manufacturers, such as agricultural equipment.
The Volatility in the Prices of Agricultural Commodities Will Affect the Agricultural Machinery Market
The increasing concern over commodity price volatility affects producers (especially small farmers). Farmers are more disadvantaged in a scenario of low prices, which forces them to reduce investments in farm mechanization. The uncertainty can then be transformed into non-optimal decisions and production levels. In general, volatility becomes a problem when it induces risk-averse behavior, leading to inefficient investment decisions for machinery consumption.
