The global automotive lead-acid battery market was worth US$ 12.5 Billion in 2018. Lead acid batteries are the oldest type of rechargeable batteries invented by Gaston Planté in 1859 and are used for the starting, lighting, and the ignition (SLI) process in the automobiles. These types of batteries use sponge lead (Pb) and lead peroxide (PbO2) plates immersed in sulfuric acid to convert chemical energy into electrical power. These batteries have been in the industry for 100 years and are still a popular source of energy storage. They are generally used in power stations and substations as they have high cell voltage and lower cost. In spite of having very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio, these batteries supply high surge currents which implies that their cells have a large power-to-weight ratio. This makes them highly compatible for motor vehicles in order to supply high current required by automobile starter motors. Apart from this, lead acid batteries also contribute in supplying voltage to various accessories in vehicles such as music systems, wipers, radio, air conditioners, charging plugs, etc.
The demand of automotive lead-acid batteries has a strong correlation with the global automobile industry. The global automobile market has exhibited strong performance across both developed and emerging markets after a period of sluggish growth as a result of the recent global economic crisis. Moreover, a spontaneous rise in the use of electric vehicles and e-bikes has also catalyzed the demand of lead acid batteries. Characteristics such as high current delivery, resistance to corrosion and abrasion, tolerance to overcharging, low internal impedance, etc. make them appropriate to be used in electric vehicles. On a regional basis, the Asia Pacific region represented the biggest driver of automotive lead acid batteries accounting for the bulk of the total sales. Asia Pacific was followed by North America and Europe. Looking forward, the market for lead acid batteries is projected to exceed US$ 15 Billion by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of 3.1% during 2019-2024.

The global timing belt market was worth US$ 6.3 Billion in 2018. A timing belt is a ribbed belt that is used to create a synchronisation between the crankshaft’s rotation and the engine valves so that the valves will open and close at an appropriate time. A timing belt is fixed under a timing cover situated in front of the engine. It is commonly manufactured out of high-quality rubber with nylon-reinforced cords inside to extend the life of the belt. A timing belt is also used to drive some additional components like water pump, oil pump, balance shaft, etc. which are also required to be synchronised with the crankshaft.
Rising sales of new automobiles along with an increasing demand from the replacement market is expected to catalyse the global demand of timing belts. Automobile sales have been strong in both developed and emerging markets after a period of sluggish growth in many regions as a result of the global economic slowdown. This has catalysed the demand of timing belts from the OEM segment. Although OEM sales account for a major share of the global timing belt market, the bulk of the demand comes from the replacement segment. The size of the replacemet market for timing belts is significantly higher than the OEM market as most timing belts normally need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Europe and North America currently account for the bulk of the global timing belt market. The Asia pacific region, however, represents the fastest growing market catalysed by a strong growth in automobile sales in China, India, South Korea, Thailand, etc. Looking forward, we expect the global timing belt market to reach a value of US$ 8.8 Billion by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.6% during 2019-2024.

The global LED chip market was worth US$ 16.4 Billion in 2018. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and is a two-lead semiconductor light source. LEDs are found in different variables all around us and in different colors such as red, blue, yellow, green, white, infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths with very high brightness. They are used in a wide range of applications that vary from backlighting in electronic products such as LCD TVs, laptops, and phones, in lighting like street lighting, automotive lighting, and general illumination, etc. LEDs offer better picture quality due to higher degree of power efficiency and brightness. The LED chip (also known as the die) represents the most important and cost intensive component of the LED. LED chips represent an important factor in determining the light quality. The chips have different ratings for brightness, emitting wavelength, and voltage. After installing the LED chip and passing current through an electrical source, a certain color of light is emitted determined by the dominant wavelength.
The LED chip market is currently exhibiting double digit growth rates. LED lights are more energy-efficient in terms of power consumption and provide high luminous intensity. They use electroluminescence to produce light without generating heat and convert electricity into energy with minimum wastage. Moreover, LED products have larger lifespan in comparison to incandescent bulbs which further drives their demand. With technological innovations and advanced research and development, the cost of manufacturing LED per kilolumen has also decreased. This has significantly reduced the average selling price (ASP) of LEDs making them a preferable choice among consumers. Furthermore, incentives provided by governments across the globe to promote the usage of energy efficient lighting is also elevating the demand of LED products. Looking forward, the market value is projected to exceed US$ 37.0 Billion by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of around 14% during 2019-2024.
