The saccharin market in China reached a volume of 17,061 Tons in 2018. The market is further projected to reach a volume of 20,972 Tons by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of around 3.8% during 2019-2024. Saccharin is a white colour powder with a crystalline texture that is relatively sweeter in taste than sugar. In China, this type of high intensity sweetener is gaining momentum as it is freely soluble in water and its consumption does not lead to dental cavities. Thus, it serves as an ideal sugar substitute for both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Currently, China is a major producer and exporter of saccharin owing to its large domestic market, easy raw material availability and low production cost. In the near future, the overall demand for saccharin in China is expected to escalate on account of increasing population, improving living standards of consumers and a shift towards healthier lifestyles.
China Saccharin Market Drivers:
As a result of sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets, there has been a rise in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes in China. This has resulted in an increasing preference for low calorie sugar substitutes such as saccharin.
Apart from its health benefits, saccharin has a much longer shelf-life when compared to sugar. When saccharin is stored in an air-tight container at room temperature, it can last for long periods.
The incidences of heart diseases, cancer and diabetes, rooted from obesity and over-weight issues, have created increased awareness in China with consumers becoming more cautious with their calorie intake. In addition, other factors such as a shift towards sedentary lifestyles and increased work pressure have stimulated the demand for low-calorie foods in the country. Saccharin is being used widely in various low-calorie foods and beverages such as soft drinks, table top sweeteners, baked goods, jams, chewing gum, canned fruit, candy, dessert toppings, salad dressings, etc. Moreover, it is also being used in medicinal applications such as cough syrups.
Incidences of health issues mainly associated with weight gain have made consumers in China more conscious about losing weight, being fit and healthy. People have begun to shift towards low-calorie diets and avoid intake of sugar. Saccharin, being a zero-calorie sweetener, is used by consumers to stay in better overall health, manage weight and maintain an attractive physical appearance.
Breakup by Product Type:
The Chinese saccharin market has been segmented on the basis of different types of products available for the consumers which mainly include sodium saccharin, insoluble saccharin and calcium saccharin. Currently, sodium saccharin is the most popular type of saccharin.
Breakup by Application:
Based on the application, the market has been segregated into food and beverages, table top sweeteners, personal care products and pharmaceuticals. Amongst these, the food and beverages sector represents the largest application area for saccharine.

The latest report by IMARC Group, titled “Spain PVC Pipes Market: Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2019-2024”, finds that the PVC Pipes market in Spain reached a volume of 186,611 Tons in 2018. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes are lightweight, strong, durable and highly resistant to chemicals. They are made from PVC resin compounded with varying proportions of processing aids, lubricants, pigments, fillers and stabilisers. They have smooth internal wall surface which reduces fluid friction and resistance to flow. This inhibits slime build-up in sewers, and virtually eliminates tuberculation and encrustation in water distribution channels. Apart from this, PVC pipes are used in several other industries, such as oil and gas, HVAC and plumbing. These pipes can be recycled and used to make new pipes when they reach the end of their service life.
The recovery of the construction industry in Spain has led to the escalated demand for PVC pipes, thereby catalysing the growth of the market. Additionally, the rising awareness among the manufacturers regarding the benefits of PVC pipes over metallic pipes is also stimulating the sales of the PVC pipes across the region. The growing cable protection applications along with expanding chemical and gas distribution network are some of the other factors bolstering the market growth. Moreover, the adoption of new irrigation techniques in Spain to transport water for irrigation or hydroponic systems is projected to significantly increase the use of PVC pipes in the agriculture sector. Looking forward, the market volume is projected to reach 244,328 Tons by 2024, registering a CAGR of 4.5% during 2019-2024.

The Indian saccharin market reached a volume of 4,653 Tons in 2018. The market is further projected to exceed 5,341 Tons by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of 2.3% during 2019-2024. Saccharin is an artificial sweetener chemically synthesized from O-toluene sulfonamide or Phthalic anhydride. Saccharin can be 300 times sweeter than table sugar (sucrose) and does not affect the blood sugar levels or cause tooth decay as it has no calories like other non-nutritive sweeteners. Nevertheless, it does have a bitter aftertaste, particularly at high concentrations. It is unstable when heated but does not react chemically with other food ingredients, which makes it good for storage.
On account of its properties, saccharin is consumed by diabetics and people on a sugar-free diet. It is also extensively employed in diet soft drinks and other low-calorie foods, and it is useful in foods and pharmaceuticals in which the presence of sugar might lead to spoilage. As a result of this, saccharin is extensively used in various sugar-free food and pharmaceuticals products, such as baked goods, jams, chewing gums, carbonated drinks, tinned fruits, toothpaste, etc.
Market Drivers
Saccharin is an artificial sweetening agent with drastically lesser amount of carbohydrate as compared to sugar. It is not metabolized by the human body and gets excreted in the same form as it is consumed. Due to these attributes, saccharin is useful for people whose diet requires a check in carbohydrate and calorie intake, such as people with diabetes and obesity. It also assists people in weight management and reduces dental cavities.
Saccharine is 300 times sweeter then sucrose. It is heat-stable and does not react with other food ingredients, hence it is widely used in cooking purposes. As mentioned earlier, saccharin is a great boon for people who have a restriction in carbohydrate and calorie intake, as it replicates the taste of sugar in any dish, thereby retaining its palatability.
Apart from its numerous health benefits, saccharin has much longer shelf-life when compared to sugar. When it is stored in air-tight container at room temperature, the normal shelf-life of saccharin is five years.
With around 72 Million diabetes patients, India currently represents the second largest country of diabetes patients in the world. By 2024, the total number of diabetes patients in India are projected to reach over 84 Million. This is expected to have a positive impact on the consumption of saccharin.
Incidences of health issues mainly associated with weight gain have made Indian consumers more conscious about losing weight, being fit and healthy. People have begun to shift towards low-calorie diets and avoid intake of sugar. Saccharin, being a zero-calorie sweetener, is used by consumers to stay in better overall health, manage weight and maintain an attractive physical appearance.
Market Summary:
Based on the product type, the market has been segmented as sodium saccharin, insoluble saccharin and calcium saccharin.
On the basis of application, the food and beverages sector represented the largest segment, followed by table top sweeteners, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and others.
The competitive landscape of the market has also been examined with some of the key players being Blue Circle Organics Pvt. Ltd., Vishnu Chemicals Limited, Organic Industries Pvt. Ltd., Aviditya Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals and Salvi Chemicals.
